2008-09 SMS Science Fair Information - 6th, 7th, 8th Grades

(use the due dates but you may turn in required work early)

 

ž     Starting Date on Science Fair Project:

*September 10, 2007

 

ž     Pick your topic and Parent - Student Understanding letter signed and returned for credit.

*Due Date- September 26, 2008

 

ž     Research the topic – Find and cite 4 references

1.       (2 magazine), and

2.     (2 books, Quality Internet site or research reports)

Type (or handwrite) above references into working bibliography.  Type Bibliography in MLA or APA format and save to computer. Turn in paper copy of working bibliography —meaning this won’t be complete until of the project is completed—and hand it in to your Science teacher. *Due Date- October 3, 2008

 

ž     Type a Summary for each reference, double spaced, 12 pt font in Arial, New Times Roman, or Comic Sans. Save summaries on a computer.  Turn in paper copy with summary of all four references.  You will be using this for your Review of Literature.

*Due Date- October 10, 2008

 

ž       Type Purpose Statement and save to computer. Turn in paper copy by this date for approval. (See Surviving Science Fair link at williamsclass.com for a good format)

*Due Date- October 17, 2008

 

ž       Type Hypothesis and turn in a paper copy for approval. Save Hypothesis to computer. (See Surviving Science Fair link at williamsclass.com for a good format)

*Due Date- October 23, 2008

 

ž      Type Research Paper (review of literature) which includes information from your Summary paragraphs (references you used in the bibliography) and your approved Purpose Statement and Hypothesis. (click on “Research Paper” link)

*Due Date – October 31, 2008

 

ž       Type Methods/Procedures and save to computer. Turn in paper copy of methods/procedures by this date. (See Surviving Science Fair link at williamsclass.com for a good format)

*Due Date – November 7, 2008

 

ž     Experimentation and Testing should be started no later than this date --  earlier if possible

* Due Date – November 14, 2008

 

ž       Type Results and create charts for display boars. Save to computer. Paper copy approved and ready to post to board by this date.  (See Surviving Science Fair link at williamsclass.com for help)

* Due Date – December 5, 2008

 

ž       Type Conclusion and save to computer. Paper copy approved by this date and ready for placement on the board. (See Surviving Science Fair link at williamsclass.com for help)

*Due Date - December 11, 2008

 

ž       Abstract typed and saved onto computer. Have ready for placement on display board. Paper copy of Abstract approved and turned in. (See Surviving Science Fair link at williamsclass.com for help)

*Due Date - December 12, 2008

 

ž       Acknowledgements typed/ready for display board and saved onto computer. Paper copy approved, turned in and ready for placement on board. (See Surviving Science Fair link at williamsclass.com for help)

*Due Date- December 12, 2008

 

ž     Final paper copy Bibliography turned in.  Turn in a paper copy of the entire report including Bibliography on this date.

*Due Date- December 12, 2008

 

ž     Project information has been completed and the results are ready to be presented to the class. Students present findings, procedures and results to fellow classmates in class. Board does not need to be in room at this time.

* Due Date- December 15, 2008

 

ž     The board is ready to be put onto the display table. The board is completed and ready to be shown for the science fair presentation.  SMS Science Fair Set up (All Boards Due and at the School Library by 8:30 a.m.):
