Required Supplies

  • Composition notebook, pencils, highlighter, colored pencils, glue sticks, and scissors.


Course Overview

  • In this course students will explore various strands of science required by the State of Tennessee. The 1st semester students will be studying the scientific strand of Biology learning about cell organelles, mitosis, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, body systems and genetics. The second semester begins its focus on Physical science learning about Newton’s Laws, simple machines, and waves. Students then shift focus towards Earth science to study rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, and earth’s layers.


Course Standards/Objectives


Major Projects subject to change by teacher discretion/preference

  • Engineer Design Process building project in class  (tin foil boats, marshmallow launchers, egg drop, etc), Mineral Brochure/foldable, Rock Cycle Comic Strip, Cell City, and TCAP review presentation, cell models, vocabulary Slides


Grading:

  • Per Sevier County Board of Education policy BP 630A, grading will be uniform across all elementary grades. In this class, daily grades will count as 67% of a student’s final average while test grades will count as 33%. Students who receive an excused absence are required to make up work missed in each class. Students who receive unexcused absences will not be allowed to make up daily missed work and the grade may be assessed as a zero (BP623). Student scores on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment (TCAP) Program’s grade three through eight shall comprise fifteen (15%) percent of the student’s final grade in the spring semester in the subject areas of mathematics, reading/language arts, science, and social studies. Of these scores have not been returned by the end of school, grades will be assigned without including including TCAP. Students and parents have access at all times to the current grading information via GradebookWizard.com


Parental Access to Instructional Materials

  • Pursuant to Tennessee Code 49-6-7003 parents or guardians may request access to any teaching materials, instructional materials and other teaching aids used in the classroom as well as any test developed or graded by the teacher. In order to facilitate this request, parents/guardians are asked to submit a request for such review via letter, email, or phone conversation prior to an established meeting for said review.
