In READ 180 there will be very little homework of a paper
and pencil variety.
There will be two on going activities.
1. Outside reading log.
What: Your child is required to read at home 100 minutes a week for a total of 300 by progress reports and 600 by the end of the six weeks. Ideally, twenty minutes a day five times a week would be perfect. That does not put an undue strain on the student. However, some students really get into a story and want to read for an hour. That would be fine. This just needs to be documented. A reading log will be given to your child for a three week period. He/she is to record the name of the book, the number of pages read, the ammount of time read, and the main idea of what was read in that time period. As parent/guardian or any concerned adult, you are to initial in the space provided that they did as they wrote down. The times will be recorded weekly. Three hundred minutes per three weeks equals a 100 for reading log and grades will be adjusted proportionately.
Reading material: They may read newspapers,
magazines, books, comic books, and even cereal boxes if they can summarize
what they have read!
Rationale: Studies have shown that the more you
read, the better you read. The reading is even more fun if you join
in. The time spent with your child is very rewarding.
2. Book Report.
Each six week your child is to do a book report.
I will give them a specific type to do. It will not be
three pages of plot and summary but rather a creative type of report.
Details will come each six weeks. Due dates are posted at the beginning
of each six weeks for that six week period.
